Drive 1 - Winderemere to Grange over Sands in Lake District
Starting at Bowness on Windermere to Newby Bridge
Head south along the road that follows Lake Winermere right down to Newby
Bridge at its southern end
Newby Bridge to Grange-over-Sands
From Newby Bridge carry on south on the A590, before turning off the main
road to get to Grange. Have a wander in the Victorian resort and look over
the sands yourself.
Grange to Cartmel
Take the minor road from Grange to Cartmel, and stop for a walk in Cartmel
Cartmel to Hawkshead
Cartmel to Newby Bridge is mainly on minor roads. At Newby bridge take another
minor road, signposted Lakeside and Hawkshead, which wines north through thickly
wooded scenery along the western shore of Windermere.
Passing through Sawrey, you can explore Bearix Potters house at Hill Top
Farm, before getting to Hawkshead. Park in the well signed car park to visit
the charming village.
Hawkshead to Ambleside
The road on from Hawkshead takes you on past Wray Castle and Skelwith Bridge
to Ambleside. There are plenty of shops to see in Ambleside
Ambleside to Windermere
Follow the lake for most of the way back to Bowness
