Drive 4 - Coniston and the west of the Lake District
Ambleside to Brantwood
Take the A593 west from Ambleside, via Skegwith Bridge, towards Coniston.
It is worth detouring to Brantwood, Ruskin's old home, on the east shore of
Coniston.
Brantwood to Coniston
Return to Coniston. Here you may be tempted to take a trip in the National
Trust's steam yacht Gondola, to enjoy both the lake an Victorian nostalgia
Coniston to Torver and Broughton
The road runs back from the lake, and under the shadow of the Old Man of
Coniston peak to Torver, where the roads climbs way from Coniston. You ascend
through nice fell scenery and then drop down to Broughton-in-Furness on the
coast
Broughton to Blawith
At Broughton turn onto the A5092 to take you to Spark Bridge. Here you eventually
get to the A5082 which runs north to Blawith at the start of Coniston Water
Blawith to Ambleside
The road gets close to Coniston in places and there is a picnic spot by
the lake before you get back to Torver. From Torver follow the A593 back to
Ambleside
