In its day one of the richest Cistercian abbeys in Britain, Furness Abbey was founded in 1127, but is today a magnificent red sandstone ruin set in a peaceful valley near Barrow in Furness
The late Norman arches remain, and the museum on the site has some of the stone carvings and also information on the life of a monk at the time of the height of the abbey's power
