Another of the great abbeys of northern England, Shap Abbey in Cumbria was founded in 1199, run by the White Canons and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540
Its setting by the River Lowther is very scenic. Though much of the stonework, particularly the carvings, was removed to build Lowther Castle and Shap Market Hall, there is much still to see.

Nearby is the small 16th Century Keld Chapel, now cared for by the National Trust.
