At Finsthwaite, near Newby Bridge at the south end of Lake Windermere in the Lake District
Part of our Industrial Revolution , this Bobbin Mill made the bobbins that were necessary for the spinning and weaving mills in Lancashire. It was built in 1835 and produced its wares continuously until 1971. However there were few changes in the technology of making bobbins and what you see today is essentially the mill as it was when it opened
Hardwoods like ash, birch and sycamore were turned on machines powered by both water and steam. The power was carried to where it was needed by belts. Specialist machines then changed the saplings into bobbins through a number of processes
There is a guided tour, demomstrations and an exhibition
