The usual way to get to Cumbria is via the M6, either travelling north from London or the Midlands, or travelling south on the M6  from Glasgow in Scotland

Travellers will soon discover that the Pennines prevent easy east to west travel, with the A69 from Newcastle, the A66 from Darlington and the A1, and the A684 through the Yorkshire Dales, being to only practical routes from the east side of Britain to Cumbria

Manchester to Kendal is 74 miles and Carlisle to Glasgow is 97 miles
